Colmar Tourist attraction: Musée d'Unterlinden
The Unterlinden Museum has a well-established reputation, thanks to its most precious offering: Matthias Grünewald's "Issenheim Altarpiece" (Retable d’Issenheim). It is now France’s most visited Museum of Fine Arts, after the Louvre in Paris.
The Musée d’Unterlinden is named for the 13th century Dominican convent of Unterlinden, the building of which today houses the museum.
The Musée d'Unterlinden contains works by Grünewald, Schongauer and Isenmann, in particular. Dedicated in part to Rhineland art, this museum displays impressive collections of paintings, sculptures and minor arts from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the highlight of which is the Issenheim altarpiece. Modern art is also represented with works by Renoir, Picasso, Léger, Braque etc. A section of the museum is also devoted to the history of the town and exhibits from Alsace.
